Dall’età di 4 anni si dedica allo studio del pianoforte, dalla musica classica ai linguaggi più moderni, fino ad arrivare allo studio della musica jazz e l’attività di concertista. Parallelamente, dato l’interesse maturato negli anni per le arti visive e la fotografia, si iscrive all’Accademia delle Belle Arti, dove consegue il diploma di primo livello in “Arti Tecnologiche”, discutendo una tesi sui legami sinestetici tra musicisti e artisti nelle arti contemporanee. Si laurea nel biennio di Fotografia dell’Accademia di Belle Arti di Catania con una tesi sperimentale sul rapporto tra fotografia e arte effimera. Attualmente collabora come autore, curatore e docente con istituzioni pubbliche e private.

Ivan Terranova è un artista visivo la cui ricerca si articola in uno spazio liminale, dove le opposizioni binarie – umano e animale, visibile e invisibile, cultura e natura – si dissolvono per lasciare emergere zone ibride, porose, di confine. Attraverso fotografia, installazione e video, Terranova costruisce ambienti in cui l’immagine non è mai semplice traccia, ma elemento attivo di un sistema evocativo e relazionale. La sua pratica fotografica nasce da un’interazione profonda con i luoghi, che non vengono mai scelti per la loro estetica, ma per la densità simbolica e stratigrafica che custodiscono. La natura, nei suoi lavori, non è mai sfondo passivo, bensì soggetto dialogante: forza viva, enigmatica, talvolta inquieta, che si oppone e si sovrappone alla dimensione culturale. L’artista si muove in questi territori con un approccio quasi rituale, restituendo immagini che sono sospensioni percettive, emersioni archetipiche, tracce di un passaggio che è insieme fisico e mitico.
All’interno delle sue installazioni temporanee, materiali naturali si fondono con la luce artificiale o vengono assemblati in strutture che evocano pratiche arcaiche e tensioni contemporanee. Il gesto installativo si configura come un atto di mediazione tra elementi eterogenei, in cui la materia agisce come soglia fra dimensione organica e artificiale, tra la memoria dei gesti e l’automazione tecnologica.
L'artista concepisce lo spazio espositivo come un organismo evocativo, dove le opere generano risonanze più che significati. La mostra è intesa come attraversamento, come geografia interiore e collettiva da abitare con lentezza. Le sue opere invitano a un tempo altro, in cui il pensiero si fa corpo e il paesaggio diventa esperienza incarnata.
Il suo lavoro si nutre di una riflessione sul paesaggio come costruzione culturale e al contempo come alterità irriducibile, ponendosi in dialogo con l’antropologia simbolica, la geografia affettiva e le teorie contemporanee del post-naturale. Coniugando rigore formale e radicalità poetica, Terranova interroga i limiti stessi della rappresentazione, per restituire allo spettatore un’esperienza dell’arte come soglia, attesa, possibilità di trasformazione.

From the age of 4, he dedicated himself to studying the piano, from classical music to the most modern languages, up to the study of jazz music and the activity of concert performer. At the same time, given his interest in the visual arts and photography over the years, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he obtained his Bachelor's degree in 'Technological Arts', discussing a thesis on the synaesthetic links between musicians and artists in the contemporary arts. He graduated in the two-year Photography course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania with an experimental thesis on the relationship between photography and ephemeral art. He currently collaborates as an author, curator and lecturer with public and private institutions.

Ivan Terranova is a visual artist whose research unfolds in a liminal space, where binary oppositions—human and animal, visible and invisible, culture and nature—dissolve to reveal hybrid, porous, borderline areas. Through photography, installation, and video, Terranova constructs environments in which the image is never a simple trace, but an active element of an evocative and relational system. His photographic practice stems from a profound interaction with places, which are never chosen for their aesthetics, but for the symbolic and stratigraphic density they hold. In his works, nature is never a passive backdrop, but rather a subject in dialogue: a living, enigmatic, sometimes restless force that opposes and overlaps with the cultural dimension. The artist moves through these territories with an almost ritualistic approach, producing images that are perceptual suspensions, archetypal emergences, traces of a passage that is both physical and mythical.
Within his temporary installations, natural materials merge with artificial light or are assembled into structures that evoke archaic practices and contemporary tensions. The act of installation takes the form of mediation between heterogeneous elements, in which matter acts as a threshold between the organic and artificial dimensions, between the memory of gestures and technological automation.
The artist conceives the exhibition space as an evocative organism, where works generate resonances rather than meanings. The exhibition is intended as a journey, as an interior and collective geography to be inhabited slowly. His works invite us into another time, where thought becomes body and landscape becomes embodied experience.
His work is nourished by a reflection on landscape as a cultural construction and, at the same time, as irreducible otherness, entering into dialogue with symbolic anthropology, affective geography, and contemporary post-natural theories. Combining formal rigor and poetic radicalism, Terranova questions the very limits of representation, to give the viewer an experience of art as a threshold, a waiting, a possibility of transformation.
